Additional Info: The Woodpecker tapestry is inspired by the tapestry of the same name designed in 1885 by William Morris (1834-1896) and is inspired by the legend of Picas an ancient king of Italy who rebutted the seductive charms of Circe who as an act of revenge transformed Picas into a woodpecker. The Gothic inscription within the tapestry states: “I once a king and chief, Now am the tree-bark’s thief, Ever ‘twixt trunk and leaf, Chasing the prey”.
