History: Marie-Antoinette tapestry wall hanging is reproduced from the original painting (circa 1783) of Marie Antoinette (1755-1793) by Louise Elisabeth Le Brun. Marie Antoinette was an Archduchess of Austria and in 1770 at 14 years of age married King Louis XVI of France at the Palace of Versailles.
Marie Antoinette became unpopular due to her lavish lifestyle at a time when the French people were undergoing hardship and hunger.
Marie Antoinette lost the trust of the French people, a distrust in-part because of her Austrian heritage and she became the subject of gossip and scandal. The Diamond Necklace Affair (1780-81) sealed her fate where she was implicated in a crime to defraud the crown jewellers of the cost of an expensive diamond necklace – in today’s money approx. $US14 million.
In 1793 following the French Revolution Marie-Antoinette was convicted of high treason by the Revolutionary Tribunal and sentenced to execution by the guillotine.
