Additional Info: Hylas and the Nymphs wall hanging is developed from an 1896 oil painting by John Waterhouse and is produced by a process of heat sublimation over a woven background to imitate woven tapestry. The scene is inspired by the Greek and Roman mythology of Hylas, a companion of Hercules and both Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece with Jason on his ship the Argo. The tragic Hylas was sent to find fresh drinking water where Hylas found a pond occupied by Naiads (female water nymphs). Hylas became infatuated by the beautiful Naiads who lured Hylas into the water where he disappeared forever. -

The tapestry shows Lady Margaret Beaufort, a descendant of King Edward III (House of Lancaster) holding her son, the future King Henry VII during The Wars of the Roses, an English civil war (1455-1487) between the houses of Lancaster and York who tussled for control of the English throne.
