Additional Info: Hylas and the Nymphs wall hanging is developed from an 1896 oil painting by John Waterhouse and is produced by a process of heat sublimation over a woven background to imitate woven tapestry. The scene is inspired by the Greek and Roman mythology of Hylas, a companion of Hercules and both Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece with Jason on his ship the Argo. The tragic Hylas was sent to find fresh drinking water where Hylas found a pond occupied by Naiads (female water nymphs). Hylas became infatuated by the beautiful Naiads who lured Hylas into the water where he disappeared forever. -

The tapestry is adapted from one of the original six tapestries that were woven mid-late 15th Century in Brussels. The original series of the Lady & Unicorn tapestries hang in a purpose built room in the Cluny Museum in Paris. -

The wall hanging is developed from the original series of tapestries designed by Claude Audran III and woven in the Gobelins' manufactory in 1784 under the direction of Jacques Neilson and is from 'The Seasons and the Elements" series of tapestries. Here we see Juno surrounded by birds and from beneath the cloud on which Juno sits a winged child blows Juno along. On each side of Juno, surmounted upon golden vessels are two glorious peacocks (Juno's bird). Juno was the guardian of finances with her temple on Capitoline Hill containing the mint, typified by the large urn of coins at the centre bottom of the wall hanging, with a cornucopia on either side overflowing with coins and jewels. -

The walls and processional route were covered in glazed bricks depicting the procession of animals with the Winged Bull depicting the weather God Adad.
